With its spectacular landscape of interlocking lakes and rivers, the Norfolk Broads is one of the UK's most popular natural tourism destinations. The area has a great deal to offer visitors with charming market towns and villages, unique wildlife, outdoor pursuits, attractions for all the family and a range of water-based activities, walking, cycling, bird watching and jet skiing.
The Norfolk Broads is now the UK’s largest nationally protected wetland and an important area for wildlife. The Broads were formed when people dug for peat in Medieval times and then they were later flooded. The Victorians used them for transporting heavy loads but nowadays they are here purely for pleasure and passengers are the boats’ main cargo.
The name of Stalham is thought to mean “Settlement by the River”. There are written references to Stalham as far back as the 11th century and it seems the original use of the surrounding land was, unsurprisingly, almost exclusively for agriculture. Notable buildings are the 15th century perpendicular-styled parish church of St Mary, in the High Street, and Stalham Hall, a 17th century Jacobean manor house on the Old Yarmouth Road.
Walnut Acre is ideally placed for a visit to Cromer, renowned for delicious crab and seafood, National Trust Homes and gardens and, of course, boating.
An extensive range of boats can be hired from nearby Stalham or Wroxham. The historic and exciting city of Norwich is approximately 20 miles away. If shopping is your thing, you may wish to know that Norwich is now ranked as the fifth best shopping city in Britain! There is also Norwich Cathedral which is more than 900 years old.
Great Yarmouth is one of the UK's most popular seaside resorts, offering great family entertainment, miles of sandy beaches, and a rich and proud maritime heritage. South Quay has recently been restored to resemble its former glory with a tree-lined avenue and walkway beside the river.
However, on your return to Walnut Acre you can look forward to complete relaxation, great scenery and friendly service. Every effort will be made to ensure that your stay with us is a pleasurable one..
